The Pyro departed dry dock as scheduled yesterday at 10am, but they docked her along side Mare Island until this morning. She is now underway to New Orleams. She just made her final pass under the Golden Gate Bridge about an hour ago.
The tugs that are with her are: Marine Retriver and the Marshall Foss. Currently, she isn't searchable by name, but the tugs are.
Also, I have to share this with all of you...
This is something Jack Hamm and 5 other shipmates learned while they were at Mare Island Drydocks . I laughed & cried while reading this:
Suzanne (the Safety Officer) said she (the Pyro) did not want to enter the dry doc when she first arrived on January 24th. Suzanne said it was weird because each time they aimed her towards the entrance she turned away. They had to pull her back out and straighten her 3-times before she let them guide her in. It was as though she was saying she was not ready yet.
Now, thinking back to the 24th of January, on her way in to Mare Island... With the difficulty of her releasing anchor before her tow, seeing her stopped and faced the other direction just before the Benicia bridge, a sail boat coincidentally sailed out the moment Pyro reaches M.I. causing havoc in the shipping lane, and with her stubbornness into dry dock makes me wonder after 52 years, how much life did we actually put in her?
Kinda makes you wonder what's up her sleeve between now and New Orleans? :)
...God bless her, as she is now on her way...
As of Today (2/6/12)
The drydock should be flooding, either today or tomorrow morning and she should be New Orleans bound, no later than Wednesday.. Will post again as soon as I get a firm departure date.
The Pyro’s trip from Mare Island to New Orleans:
She will indeed be going through the Panama Canal AND the process will be the same as it was, going from Suisun Bay to Mare Island- via TUG BOATS! I thought for sure a larger vessel would be pulling her from behind!
The Pyro’s Arrival:
Once she arrives at Southern Recycling in New Orleans, she will be available for approximately two weeks, for visits and I "think" boarding, but not for sure at this point. After that two week period, she will then officially be in tear down/scrap mode and no visits will be permitted.
I will be in contact with Randy Boudreaux, at Southern Recycling, at about week 5 to see if they have an ETA, will find out exactly which location she will be at in New Orleans (there are a few possibilities), will get the full scoop on visiting and confirm boarding is for sure allowed, and if so, the days & hours, and if you are able to bring a few tools on-board to remove/take some mementos, etc.

FINAL BOARDING INFO
BOARDING DATE: THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2012
(Contact is Randy Boudreaux)
4801 Florida Avenue New Orleans, LA 70186
There will not be two boarding dates as we had hoped. Randy would like you to arrive as close to 0900 as possible. No one will get turned away arriving later, but, you may have to wait a little while, as it will be escorted. Please do not arrive any later than 1500 however.
No children or family groups are allowed. You can bring a spouse/better half and/or a friend.
The above address is the location of the Pyro. If a map or directions are needed, please Google the info. If you are not Internet savvy and would like help, please let me know and I will be more than happy to get you the information. When you arrive there, you will drive up to a security gate (it is manned 24/7, so don’t even think about sneaking in after hours- LOL!). Just tell them you are there to see the Pyro (they will be informed prior to your arrival), they will let you in and tell you where to park and how to get to the office.
Unfortunately, going down into the main space (engine room) will not be permitted, as sadly, they have already started work down there.
You will have access to the superstructure/ main decks, the bridge, back aft, etc. This will all be escorted.
Whatever it is you want from the ship, within reason, probably will not be denied. He said let them know as you are there (point it out). They will either remove it for you right then and there, or if it takes time or specific tools are needed, they will remove it for you that day if possible, or, he said they will have it removed during tear-down process and mail it to you.
A FEW OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS:
NO OPEN TOED SHOES WILL BE ALLOWED ON BOARD, WHATSOEVER... STEELE TOED SHOES/BOOTS ARE PREFERRED... HIKING BOOTS AND TENNIS SHOES ARE ALLOWED
DO NOT BOARD WITH ANY TOOLS
EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE NOT GOING DOWN INTO THE MAIN SPACE, THEY STRONGLY SUGGEST BRINGING A FLASH LIGHT, PER PERSON. YOU WILL PROVIDED WITH HARD HATS.
DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERAS!
LASTLY… KEEP IN MIND, THEY HAVE STARTED TO DO SOME WORK ON HER NOW...
SHE IS IN A SLIP, MEANING SHE’S SOMEWHAT IN THE WATER, BUT HER BOW IS UP ON ON THE GROUND. HER BOW MAY BE CUT INTO BY THE TIME YOU ARRIVE. HER DIGNITY IS GOING FAST. I AM SURE THIS WILL BE AN EMOTIONAL TIME FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE GOING. JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW SHE WON’T LOOK LIKE THE PICS YOU JUST SAW OF HER A FEW DAYS AGO AS SHE WAS COMING IN. THANKFULLY, THIS IS THE LAST BIT OF INFO HE GAVE ME OVER THE PHONE, AS I STARTED CRYING ON THE PHONE AND HAD TO HANG UP WITH HIM...
EVEN THOUGH IT MAY NOT BE EASY, ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH HER.
HER LAST GOODBYE'S TO YOU, ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOURS ARE TO HER. ? |
