U.S.S. Pyro Guest Book

Because of the capabilities of the new guestbook we no longer have a need to archive, but for messages prior to 2007 you can still View Archives Here

With the latest update of the Guestbook software, the addresses that you select when you respond to a shipmate have been "munged", this is to protect you from the email harvesters that haunt the internet.

Just replace the ~AT~ with the @ symbol and the ~DOT~ with a period.

Message from Kim Box-- I was just informed that tomorrow, Friday, February 3rd will be the last day anyone can board the Pyro; The latest anyone would really want to get there tomorrow, would be 1500; That way you would for sure have a full hour with her, as they close at 1630; Kind Regards, The USS Pyro Monitoring Officer, Kimberly Box :)

Greetings Shipmates: Spent about 4 hours this morning on the Pyro, boy did that bring back some memories; We could go anywhere on the ship, all the compartments were open to maintain constant humidity so we could wander at hearts content; Ran into two other groups of folks doing the same thing, they were from the later years 80's 90's should have written down the names; Anyway I wandered all around the compartments in the superstructure and also went down into the Engine Room, had never been down there, had no business there so never went; Did get down into Hold #2 they had the escape hatches open, not much there but some old cable; All the exterior hatches and elevator doors are welded shut; Will be putting some pictures on the web site as soon as I can; They are flooding the drydock on the 8th and she moves out to Baton Rouge LA on the 9th; so if you are going to visit be sure and get there before the 8th; Gave the folks at the drydock one of the USS Pyro patches, that goes on a hat, Made their day!!

For all of you that plan to go to Mare Island Drydocks to visit/board the ship, it can only be done during the shipyard's "office hours", which is Monday through Friday, from 0830 to 1630; It may be possible to gain entrance to the shipyard after hours and on the weekends, but only to look at her from ground level and take pictures, but you can not board her; This is for safety reasons, as they need someone other than a yard worker present, preferably their safety manager; When you do arrive and go to the office during the week, let them know why you're there and they should hook you right up; If any problems arise, ask for Gary Whitney, the Shipyard General Manager; Use his name for point of contact, as I just got off the phone with him about all of this and he also promised he wouldn't forget any of our conversation due to my last name (lucky me- LOL); Please also be considerate when you go, as they close at 1630, so try to be there before 1600; AND DON'T FORGET TO BRING A FLASHLIGHT WITH YOU and maybe a screwdriver :) Thanks to Kim Box for the info!!

Just went to Mare Island and went aboard - wow! Lot's of memories! Everything still looks the same; My old desk in the ships office is still there; The coffee pot on the mess decks is still there!! The firs class insignia is still on the floor of the 1st class lounge; Seems like yesterday, but it has been over 21 years; I encourage you to visit the old girl if you get a chance before she is cut up;

Pyro was sold to Southern Recycling LCC of New Orleans, LA for $1,558,000; so that's where she's going to be taken for scrapping when she's done being cleaned at Mare Island; (I tried to link the actual contract, but it got blocked) She won't make it to New Orleans till late March and Southern isn't the fastest scrapyard out there, so you should be able to get pictures, at least from across the canal, during your reunion in May; Good Luck!
