He was a Warrant Gunner on the ship. He was aboard the Pyro at Pearl Harbor. Like many of those who served during that time, he had very little to say about his experiences on December 7 or during the rest of the war. His remained in the navy until 1964, retiring after 32 years service as a Commander. He passed away in 1966. His other WWII ship was the Mazama. He was aboard that ship in Ulithi when it was attacked by a Japanese Kaiten (suicide human torpedo). Thanks to the Internet, I have discovered more about what happened on Pyro on December 7 as well as the attack on the Mazama. Since this was my first ship it will always hold a special place in my memories. I worked in First Division with BM1 Bob Stevens as my LPO and BMCS Bitner as our LCPO. Oh the sea stories about those two fast paced and hectic years on PYRO! The California Grapes dancing on the ship during UNREPS on the 88 cruise was only one of many.
