Good to hear from some of the people I hadn't heard from or thought of in long time. I have made a few contacts off this website like Bash, Cecak, Gonshorowski, Derosa, Cunningham, but if anyone has any information on Rod Gooden ESQ. He was a BT, Last time I heard anything about him, he was in San Diego with his family. I can remember cleaning firesides myself and cleaning the stacks with a wire brush.
There was some good times and some that were better left right where they happened. I started out a BTFN and became a PO2 before leaving. Take care.

I came aboard DC-3 and worked out of the carpenter shop(yea, that little bitty space under the forward winch platform)until DCCM Quick got tired of torturing me ,then I spent my time in the shipfitter shop(You rember, aft, under the fantail, just above the rudder post) So I guess you could say I served in PYRO from stem to stern,ha ha ha.Anybody remember the night off YANKEE STATION that the forward deck load and fork trucks broke loose, and the CBU's spilled bomblets all over the main deck? Oh what a night...

Hey All,
I have heard alot about those of you who have served with my husband. I just wanted to let you guys know that the contact you have had with him has meant a great deal. All I have ever heard about was his shipmates, geesh, its finally good to put some faces to names. Anyhow, I wanted to let you guys know that we had to reformat our computer and I spaced saving our address book. We no longer have anyone's e-mail address. So if you could e-mail Larry again it would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you all and I hope the holidays bring you the joy and happiness that I get every time I look at my husband and stepdaughter. God bless all of you and Merry Christmas.

I found out about this website through a e-mail sent to me by Raymond Gillman. It has been quite a while since I served on the USS.Pyro and I still remember a lot of the faces from those days. Some of the names I served with were EMC Farmer, IC2 Holland, OS2 Thorson, and EM2 Lehman. I have lost touch with my fellow shipmates and wonder from time to time how they are doing and what they are doing these days. If any of the people that I served with recognize my name feel free to email me at csills2313@aol.com. Good to see that you guys keep these memories alive. Thanks, Carter

I have to admit to being surprised how many names I recognize in this GBmsg. Started my time on Pyro in 2nd Div., worked on the flight deck, mess cooked in the ward room, struck GMG and ended my days in 3rd Div. Lots of great memories. Who could forget the USS Pyro - Underway. Saturday & Sunday - Piss You Right Off - Aggrivation Expected 24 Hours a day. You know, I wonder what ever became of gmgsn-3 Weber. A character I shall not soon forget. I remember him trying to hit on the captain's daughter on a ship sponsered trip to Tahoe.

Smitty, it's good to see you're still rockin' & rollin'.

I would love to hear from any old shipmates. Shoot me an e-mail

Hi guys, Just a note to say that this website is by far the best and most organized of all websites of all my past ships. My boss at work doesnt think to highly of the uss pyro being used as wall paper on the work computer. so I put an old f2c banshee on to appease the airey fairey. He is better now I just wish he wouldnt stand so close while I'm typing this....Get in touch with me and I'll be sure to warp some memories and edit some past history. Bye all

Served aboard Pyro in "R" division with Lt Stinson, Chief Cragun, and steamed through two WestPac's with Hamm, Dave Hubal and a host of others. I will always remember the call "Duty HT, lay to the scullery" to drain those clogged deck drains yet again! Yuck! On the last time out, I climbed out on the safety net off the helo deck as we aasiled under the Golden Gate, in order to be the last man to leave the states and made damn sure I was right up on the Bullnose when we came back so that I would be the first man back. Hi to all the crew, God bless

This year has been pretty uneventful, but I Feel that next year things will change for the better,I miss hanging out with you folks from86~90,it was fun with a capital "F" and the humor was painfully funny, rarely do you find really good humor, sailors are some funny folks really some of the best times I ever had in my existance was with my navy buds, the stories were beautifully warped and the philospofical talks transended mental stimulation,"liberty" was a whole other story :}I miss some of that spontanious insanity nowdays,I often have flashbacks on and off the Pyro{AE~24}OF THOSE TIMES,P.S. people still say I look like Elvis Presley? After having these memories I wouldnt change my days on the USS PYRO for any other sailor in the Fleet I personally will try to make the reunion in 2003 and hope that as many guys from my old 3rd Division will to Please try and contact me this was nice and will check back often to see who has signed in the Guest Book Congratulations and God Speed to ALL USS PYRO AE-24 SAILORS.

There are a lot of you guys out there I remember. It was good reading, Just today I had to dig through the photo album and get the pictures of the shark that was caught. Durning West-Pac '88, for my sons school report.

Went back up to frisco this past year 02. place has changed a lot, new stadium is in now. where there was just a dirt. lot, right accross from the little sandwich shop we used to go to while we in the yards. sandwich shop is still there. didn't make it to Vallejo. My father served in Pyro from approximately late 1939 until early 1942. He was a Warrant Gunner on the ship. He was aboard the Pyro at Pearl Harbor. Like many of those who served during that time, he had very little to say about his experiences on December 7 or during the rest of the war.

His remained in the navy until 1964, retiring after 32 years service as a Commander. He passed away in 1966.

His other WWII ship was the Mazama. He was aboard that ship in Ulithi when it was attacked by a Japanese Kaiten (suicide human torpedo).

Thanks to the Internet, I have discovered more about what happened on Pyro on December 7 as well as the attack on the Mazama.

These sites are great at keeping the memories that we should never allow to die alive.

Many happy and not so happy memories
of WestPac and shipmates onboard.
It's good to see a webpage and find
information about the ship.

I was fortunate to go aboard the ship
for a cruise from Portland Or to Astoria
in the early 1990s.

Would love to hear from 3rd Div
cannon cockers from my time on board.
Never thought to look for a website
by ships name. Is there any way to get
this out to old sailors across the
nation?

Great to see a organisation devoted to the USS PRYO AE-1/AE-24. Since this was my first ship it will always hold a special place in my memories. I worked in First Division with BM1 Bob Stevens as my LPO and BMCS Bitner as our LCPO. Oh the sea stories about those two fast paced and hectic years on PYRO! The California Grapes dancing on the ship during UNREPS on the 88 cruise was only one of many. I look forward to hearing from my old shipmates.

Sorry for the incomplete signature on here. my son hit the wrong key. I am a truck driver out of Seattle Wa. now. no e-mail address. Pat Marcus call Jacquie and get my number. Reading this brings back a lot of good memories. I can't see Smitty still in, much less an officer. Being from San Diego, I will do what it takes to get to the reunion in '03

Glad to see the association is growing, alot of names I'd almost forgotten.I emailed a few of you guys from the Pyros Pirates era(Sasebo)1978!I would like to hear from some of you guys and hope to make a reunion soon.I am glad to have gotten back in touch with Denny and CH ! I work with Rick(Rocky Hispanski aka Ski)Thoren and if anyone wants to say hi will pass it along as he is blissfully computer illiterate!Lets hear it for the Pyro long may she sail in our collective memories! Also a good antispam program like McAfees is worth the money,I use it and it cut spam down to nothing while being easy to use and you can still check all your email!

I often think back fondly to my Pyro days and the people who made them bearable and worthwhile. Thank you, my fellow snipes for making them so memorable. Drop me a line and let me know how your doing.

Howdy from down under
I was a BTFN
I was onboard when the mainthrust bearing melted. That should prove I was onboard and George was a great Capt.
Would like to hear from old shipmates.

one more thing really quick. LOL
I have a picture here of our Line Shaft Bearing Party we had ;) Me, chaney, gramley, Lilly, Argo, Derosa, Henson, Christoferson, and Lowry.. well thats who is in the picture anyways ;) But I just wanted to add,,, As much as those 2 nasty bearing parties were at the time, I wouldnt have wanted to do it with any other group of Snipes!
and another thing!!! I also remember comeing off of watch at 12:01 am on wog day with Gramley, and getting a head start on the rest of the sleeping ship at becoming a ShellBack ;) But at least I did have to scream for Flipper through the Bullnose for an hour... ROFL how was that anyways Corey Gramley? ROFL okie.. later all.
