I cant believe Vince is no longer with us.Last I spoke to him he was in remission and his outlook was very positive.I just thought if anyone could beat hodgkins,it would be him.His Attitude was extraordinary during his fight.
I have good memories of him and I standing quarter deck watch...what a goofball he was.
Our prayers go out to his family and girlfriend.

West pac 88 was fun, missing Mobassa due to having to go back into the gulf...will never forget waking up with the sun on the wrong side of the ship, and realizing we were sailing back into the Gulf for Operation Preying Mantis. Capt McPheeters saying on the 1MC that we were the mighty warship Pyro, and we were all going to be decorated war vets, or something like that....'

Hi Everyone!

It has been quite some time since I have posted.
Some of you remember me, some of you may not...

I served onboard from 1988 to 1990 and had married BT2 Rick Engels (Rick & Kevin Stottlemyer were close friends). This February, will be 10 years since Rick has passed on. I miss him dearly to this day!

The last 18 months have been a true challenge for me... I had a massive stroke and had to learn to walk and talk again, was diagnosed with Diabetes, went through bankruptcy and just a few months following that, went through a divorce, which just became final at the end of August. I am still to this day, out of work/on Disability and not sure yet, if or when I will ever return.

I am going home this year(to Los Angeles) to spend Christmas with my mom and her husband (I am still living in Phoenix).

Please drop me a line!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Those were some of the best & hardest of times in my life, that is until I raised teenage girls & now that I think about it, It wasn't so bad.
I worked in the galley With Dingus MeGee.I made some great friends at that time especialy when we baked fresh bread @ 0400. Alot of sleep walkers. My brother Butch was known as the "Saint" He was a BMSN on the PYRO.
This is a great site .Thanks for keeping her spirit alive & well. Michael Fermil

Shipmates,
I was at work this morning and the morning announcements they said that all the government offices were closed because of the fact that it was veterans day and didn't say anything else about it. It made me think about how much people forget about the sacrifices that were made to allow these people to take the day off from work.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the fellow veterans for their time and their scarifices, and to the families of those who loved ones are now past, I think they can remember the reason why we celebrate this day. Thank you for your service.

My sincere condolences on the loss of Vince (Ram). He was indeed a great guy, with a quick smile and a hearty laugh. I enjoyed reminicing with him via email over the last couple years or so; it brought back alot of memories. I never told Vince, but I lost my own brother to Hodkins in '03, so I know what he was dealing with. I also tried to email you, but it did not go through, thus this post here. Once again, so sorry. I am thankful though for the opportunity to have known Vince. God bless ya.

How would you like to sleep in a real bed when you bring your female of choice back on board the ship with you after after spending a romantic evening ashore? How about an after dinner drink or two before you hit the hay. How about your own personal steward, your own stateroom and your OWN HEAD? Sound like you got promoted? Or are you having flashbacks of daydreams while passed out in our homeport away from home.....Olonapo, P.I.?
Nope.........your real ship has come in and it doesn't even have a hull number nor is it going back again to sail again with the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.

My name is Jennifer, and I'm Vince's girlfriend. I report to you with great sorrow, the passing of one your shipmates, after losing a hard fought battle with Hodgins Disease, A cancer of the central nervous system. He spoke of you often, and frequently thumbed through the pages of the WestPac 80 yearbook, so I buried it with him. He told me of some of the wonderful stories about his shipmates, and his tenure in the Navy. Although he never got in thouch with BM3 Bates, or BMC Scott, he spoke of them often. Other noteable names were Thompson, Debar, Massingill, Malady, Trevino, Heskitt, Boggs, LT Spillers, Capt. Manning, and a list of other notables to numerous to name.
A special thank you goes out to States, Niskanen, Sternglass, and Wells, who kept in touch on a regular basis.
He was a good man, and will be missed for a long, long time.

Hey all you OLD Pyro sailors from past years.
If you miss seeing the guys you once sailed with, why not try it again. but this time it will be a little easier, food better, drinks on board (legally). Best of all you get to talk in person and see how some have changed and others still seem to be the same as they were in 65.
Get going and start planning for 2006 cruise of a life time.
As for you Jimmy Redburn get your butt out of that caggin country and join the rest of us!
Worrell,Strunk,Hale, and others will be there.
Let's see if we can get several hundred there and have a real liberty call.
All you old ship mates in Pa. Get out of yankee country for a while and see what the rest of the world is like.
Who knows you might decide to move south a little.
Past the word to all you know or can find, this is going to be a ball.

I have been looking for BT Lawrence Joseph for several years now. I located him last night. He retired in 1975 (BTCS)he now lives in San Diego. We talked for over an hour. He is in good health. I told him about this site, he said he would look it. I read him some of the names of those who were on board during his years on the Pyro as well as the memorial page. You may be hearing from him soon. I will continue my search for other former shipmates.

We've just released a video on underway replenishment. To see scenes from the video go to our web page and enter the word underway or call 1-800-277-1977.

This video is for all the sailors who kept the fleet moving
Among the numerous ships featured in this video are:
USS Great Sitkin (AE-17),
USS Mount Kitmia (AE-16),
USS Sylvania (AFS-2),
USS Hyades (AF-28),
USS Truckee, (AO-147),
USS Mount Baker (AE-4),
USS Mattaponi (AO-41),
USS Pyro (AE-24),
USS Camden (AOE-2),
USS Vega (AF-59),
USS Mars (AFS-1) and more.

This video is divided into three parts. Part One is a narrated training film titled, Replenishing At Sea. Produced by the Navy in 1948, the film documents the type of replenishment ships, the techniques employed and equipment used to transfer cargo from one ship to another.

Part Two includes excellent scenes from replenishments conducted during WWII, the Korean War and repenishments of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean during the 1960s. This part has captions with a music soundtrack.

Part Three examines replenishment during the Vietnam War. This part includes the Navy produced video titled: Beans, Bullets & Black Oil. It documents the role played by Service Group 3 in Vietnam. This part also includes additional film footage of outstanding scenes from replenishments conducted with ships off the coast of Vietnam.

Howdy mates,
I recently went to Vallejo California on Vacation, I have relatives there. Mare Island is becoming a housing community with a sports arena. The off base housing on Sacramento street has been remodeled and some torn down for town houses and culda sack negborhoods. I was wondering if the ship that was at the Benicia mothball fleet was the Pyro, I could not see the Hull numbers because they were blacked out. It sure looked like the Pyro or one of the ships in that class of ships. Vallejo has grown to about 120,000 people with really high priced homes. Concord base is closed and the weapons facility is about to close. All the bases in that are are closed, including Alemeda, Oakland Naval supply. The only base in operation is Travis Air force base. take care. Jim

My name is Cathy Dodd and I'm writing on behalf of my husband, Woody Hoffman, who was the Pyro's supply officer from 1965-1968. FYI, he is alive and well (even though you may have assumed that he'd passed because of the erroneous listing of "Robert W. Hoffman, Supply Officer" in the "Memorials" section of this website). Woody's recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's but is in the earliest stages and is doing well. He remembers his time on the Pyro with gusto and would love to hear from any of his shipmates. You can see a recent picture of Woody at http://memorywalk.kintera.org/treasureisland/woodyhoffman. When you view that webpage, we'd also appreciate it if you'd consider making a pledge to support Woody in our local Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk which raises money for Alzheimer's research and support services. We look forward to hearing from you!

2005 Reunion in Branson was fantastic, what an experience. Saw guys I sailed with for four years and have all my life wondered where they were, and where their lives had taken them. It was a great four days, one I wish I'd taken advantage of years ago. I had all the excuses in the world for not attending, Money, Job, Family you name it, but you need to put those things on the back burner and treat yourself to a few days you won't forget. We need more association members, we need more attendees at the reunions. If you know where old shipmates are, let us know, we'll contact them and try to get them back on-board. We need to keep this association going any way we can. Talking with those old AE-1 sailors was such a great experience, it's a treat to listen to their sea-stories, what an existence it must have been to be on an Ammunition ship during W.W.2 We enjoyed Branson and look forward to a 2006 cruise thats being put together by Tom Sanborn.

Slaite'Happy St.Patrick's Day,I remember what brought me up here to Santa Rosa,a little pub on Tennessee Street in Vallejo, were I met my X wife,it has since closed down but,I remember every st.patty's Day they would have food spralled out on there pool tables,I drank back then guinnesse and Killians Red and they had some really good corn beef and cabbage,I also remember they closed off a street maybe it was Georgia street and they had vender's and this one Irish guy named Patrick, gave me a sample of his soda bread he had made fresh and it was incrediable, later we went to a near by coffee shop to talk some legitamite blarney about Ireland,Music, ect.,nicest man,now on to my main topic of "the Pyro" I was in the garage earlier this night came across the 1988 westpac yearbook and saw some picture,of fellow ship mates that I often wonder how there doing, some I have E-mailed not so long ago,but wish I could reach others I used to hang out with on Liberty, maybe someday? Here's a shout out to the Pyro gang that served during my stint 89-92. Hope every one is doing well and living life to it's fullest. Still remember the West PAC cruises we made like it was yesterday, man did we party. You guys were some of the greatest friends I've ever known. Hope to see you all again one day soon!
