Hello Weyer and Gramley. I thought I left an e-mail address. Sorry.
I was in the reserves and got mobilized for 13 months after 9-11. It was on Active Duty that I found the Pyro website. I have not checked it in I guess none months or so. Getting reaqaunted with the family. Sorry again.
If anyone remembers Bob Killen he's still in the Navy in Florida. I think he retires later this year. Who would have thought?
Off the top of my head and in no particular order. I'll never forget:
-Commander Smith's retirement speech.
-Six and six with work days and a case of insomnia. -Cedric Hudson's reasons for reenlisting in the Navy. -Chaney's "You are throuuuugh!" -Chief Bringas giving me a 3.6 in writing ability and his relentless stressing of the theory of time management. Thank you, I think some of it finally set in. -Paul Argo whipping me at Rummy. -Paul Argo nearly getting killed. -Derosa and I playing our games, he pretending to be at work and me pretending to be supervising him (in a pinch I knew I could always count on him). Such a good guy. -Thorn, Killen and our walkabout near Portland. A minadventure we could make a movie of it. -Randy Teats saving me in Thailand. -Nearly passing out moving the Steam fire pump all the way from the Engineroom to the main deck so a tender could work on it. I don't think I've ever been so exhausted in my life. I had the dry heaves at the end of it. Who else worked on that? Paul Argo and John Lilly I think but there were more. It's all a blur but I remember feeling that our "heroic efforts" were unappreciated. Perhaps I was wrong. -The unfortunate suicide in the Aft Diesel Generator Room. -The ship's van hitting a local in Guam -Dilution is the solution to crapped up feed tanks or so we were told. -The log writing party. -West's belief that everyone was "*icking the dog". -Chad Koskella one of the most reliable and competent workers I've ever know. -George Bybee putting salt in the coffee and getting slammed unfairly for calling himself a country bumpkin. He was and probably still is. Heres to you George!
-WestPac 91, No AC. It was so hot people slept on the floor or the main deck just to find a place they could rest. We lived like animals.
All in all I'm glad the times were so....intense. Many memories. Drop me a line if you'd like to say Hi.

Spent the early part of my time in the Navy on the Pyro. Saw the note from Tom Rousseau about his "fall" into the river. I remember that and a couple of other stories too. Great to see names of the guys that I served with and wish that there were more. I was there for 2 captains, Weikert and "Wild Bill" Swan. I remember all the coffee cups that kept disappearing off the bridge while Wild Bill was there. Maybe QM2 Alton can shed some light on that.

Tom, if you see this, you remember Otto? That night he came back and we had him taking "little steps, little steps aye"? If I had a nickle for everytime I laughed over that one, I would be very well off.

For those of you that remember Fred Preskey, I think he was there in '74, he passed on shortly after being discharged from a brain tumor. He was from the same town that I was from and I checked up on him after I got out in '78. Was sorry to hear that about him, a great shipmate.

Anyone remember Charlie Rhea?. RM1 Hopper? or the night that LT Mangum was almost clobbered in Subic? Saw that RMC McMurtrey checked in, Hey Chief, how's it going? Saw that Rick Haitt had checked in too, last time I saw him was in late 70's early 80's when we visited. And what ever happened to Moose Miller from CIC? Last I heard he was in Illinois near the Chicago area.

Anyway, got out after 8 and making 1st. Was watching a M.A.S.H. rerun where they were making the B&W "documentary" and talking about keeping in touch after Korea was over and that made me think about what happened to all the guys that I served with. Did a little surfing and found site for all three ships I was on. This one has the best history however so drop a line if you remember.
God Bless.

Hi, I recently visited Sacramento to visit my parents. We took a drive to Port Chicago, Vallejo and Richmond. It had been so long since I was there that I could not recognize anything. I sent a note prior to my trip and Kim sent directions to Port Chicago, thanks again for your assistance. I ave been on a long search for my former BT1 Lawrence Joseph, I know he was from Louisiana but I do not know where he settled after retiring. I looked through some of the old notes and someone had said that Yates BMC had settled near Hayward, CA. Is there anyone out there who may know exactly where he lives or what his first name is? I can do a people search on him, maybe he knows where Joseph is. I was successful in locating another former shipmate Sam Calhoun, he was a ENFN 62-63. I spoke with his wife and she informed me that he passed away 2 years ago.I had contacted him several years ago but I lost his phone number but was able to find his name on the internet white pages.

It appears that most of us that served on the Pyro during 74-76 don't have too much to say about anything...or is it that we don't remember very much?!?
Hamebone, I rode my Harley all the way from Indiana to Walnut Creek. Tried to locate you in Sacramento before I left, but received no replies from you. Hope you are well.
Whichever person it is that's going to Port Chicago this month, you can't get very far past the entrance turn off to the Concord main base, then the road is barricaded off. Unless you can get there from the east somehow, or through the main base, you won't see much from Port Chicago Road/Highway(whatever it was called)...
Jim McCann...You did get through to my right number here in Hicksville, IN, but I haven't been feeling very well lately. So, as soon as I get over whatever it is I'm going through, I have your number, and I will call.

PYRO was my 1st duty station after Boot Camp. I was assigned to 3rd Division as a torpedoman striker & was aboard for the '64 WestPac cruise & Exercise Crazy Horse in which, as I recall, we unrepped various carriers including Enterprise. I failed to distinguish myself in any way other than to be caught sleeping in a ventilator compartment during this exercise & shitcanned to 1st Division. I'm amused to see entries on the page by Tony Medeiros, whom I remember well & would be happy to hear from & share a few memories of Port Chi, Po City & various other hell holes around the Pacific.

I would love to perhaps set up a date where we could all meet for dinner sometime and if you have a significant other, to have them accompany you as well. I just wanted to see if something like this would interest you and be possible? Please write back to me and let me know what you think. Shoot, it could even be a "lunch" on a Sunday? Send me your thoughts and ideas.
Maybe in March sometime?

I live in Mesa and am fully able to drive some distance if need be.
Butch, I see you live in Douglas.
Phil, I see you live in Apache Junction.
Jerry, I see you live right in Phoenix.

There are 2 other people that live in AZ, but they don't have e-mail addresses... One is, James Browning and he lives in Surprise. I could always call him, but not sure if he would be able to attend, as he is quite elderly. There is also Robert Miller who lives in Yuma. Let me know what you guys think and if it sounds like a possibility, I'll call these two guys and check with them as well.

Anyone else out there that thinks you could swing it, let me know!

I look forward to your reply!

Hi All & Happy New Year!

Just thought I'd drop in again to send my hello's and best wishes for a wonderful 2003! All is well with me and thank you to those of you who have written to me recently. Is it just me, or does anyone out there have weird dreams being back on the Pyro? I get one at least every few months. Most of them are coming back on board after all of these years to reunite with everyone and go off on an unrep trip. And a "trip" it is!

Bye for now.

What a great site. I have many memories of E division and our years of service. I passed the Pyro many times while it was it was in the reserve fleet in Bremerton. I always looked with pride on the days I sailed on her.
