Isn't it common knowledge that when someone puts their email address on a web site for the whole world to see, anyone else can pick up on that address and send all kinds of garbage.

Regarding the spam we are all getting as a result of leaving our address on this page, I take it from the comments and complaints about the spammers very few if any of you have clicked on the scam alert at the top of this page. Reading through that alert you will find precise instructions about what to do. Just a matter of clicking on the links and going from there. Bottom line, the association has done something. It's up to you to report it and the Secret Service to investigate it.

Thank you for your feedback, shipmates!
I am however, disappointed that no response is coming from the Association itself. Yes, one can "change their e-mail address" in a case like this, but that is much easier said than done. It is very inconvenient, when over 50 people have your address and you run your finances, etc. from the Internet. It is a lot of work to change your e-mail address when so involved with friends & business, etc. Junk mail filters work to an extent... You can block particular addresses, but not good to block domains! These SPAMMERS are mainly using Hot Mail and Yahoo. They create an address, use it, then delete it and create another. It goes on and on.

If you set you junk mail filters to highest level of security, you probably won't get it. Then, all you need to do is get a new email account. And, BTW, it's Barrister Martins Adams from Togo, nowadays.
You can always do what I do...laugh your arse off, and send 'em a virus...

DEAR UNDISCLOSED,
YES, I AM GETTING EMAIL FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WANTING ME TO GIVE THEM PRIVATE FINANCIAL INFORMATION. I KNOW THAT THEY ARE GETTING IT FROM THIS SITE BECAUSE THEY ARE ALSO INCLUDING MY OLD NICK NAME FROM WHEN I WAS ONBOARD PRYO. I HOPE THAT SOMEONE IN THE ASSOCIATION WILL SEE THIS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I KNOW THAT GILMAN VISITS A LOT AND MAYBE HE KNOWS WHOM TO CONTACT AND GET THE SPAM ISSUE TAKEN CARE OF?

I have become disappointed with this site... There is way too much SPAM generating, from acquiring our personal e-mail addresses from this site. Something needs to be done, like making a member log-in for all shipmates. I no longer plan to associate myself with this site until something is done. In the mean time, I will have to change my e-mail address. I am sure ALL OF YOU out there are getting SPAM e-mail from pittiful people from other countries, asking for bank account numbers, money, etc. If you are, this IS the place they are getting our addresses.

Happy Sails.

Just wanted to say thank you to Ray Gillman who contacted me regarding my post dated 5/29/02. Within 24 hours of posting I had the correct name, address, and phone number of the shipmate my father was looking for. They spent an hour on the phone talking about their Pyro days and catching up, and are planning to get together this summer. All these years and they've only lived 2 hours apart the whole time! Anyway, thanks again to the Pyro association and to Ray Gillman for bringing two shipmates together again after 41 years.

Boy am I a dumbass! I just saw your message posted here in march. Write or call (414) 545-4177. Do you still have that godawful low rider? Man, did we pick up the women in that thing! And, a nice, bumpy ride, to boot. I'm surprised you didn't have to change your shocks after the first time you drove all over Concord NWS.

Seeking a shipmate from 57-61...

My father, Harold Wolf, was onboard the Pyro from 59-61. He was excited to recently learn of this association last year, and has since joined. He speaks very fondly of his time on the Pyro and would very much like to locate one of his shipmates from back then. I am not sure of the spelling, but his name is "Tiny" Wattross or Wattruss or similar. I think his first name was Paul, but am unsure. I have been unable to locate a muster roll to verify the spelling. He would have been onboard around the same time -59-61. I believe they were both plank owners if that makes it easier to locate information on him. If anyone knows Tiny, or knows how to reach him, I'd love to surprise my dad. It sounds like they were pretty tight back in the day. Any help is appreciated! You can reach me at jwolfpbs@aol.com. I'll be happy to send additional contact infomation offline. Please put USS PYRO in the subject line of any e-mails. Thanks!

Must be an "old-age" thing--can't even remember when I was in PYRO--it was really 59-61; I was on overseas duty in Korea in 61-63.

Just found out that Jack Wales (CAPT, USN, Ret)died in April. Jack was the engineer officer of our nucleus pre-com crew of the AE-24; doubt if he was a member of the PYRO Association or ever looked at this site--he didn't seem to be much of a "joiner." Just sending this info in case any remembered him.

I highlined aboard from the USS Saratoga sometime around August of 72. CDR Swan was the Captain at that time. I was there when Rousseau went M.O.B. into the Suissan river. The site is great, I remember a lot of the people who have visitied this site, Grayson (who figured you'd re-up let alone not land in the brig) Rhinehart, Lasher, Sotero, Duffy, and Gunner Smith. I came aboard a QMSN and left as a QM2. Seeing all the names of the female visitors to this site that were crew really floored me. Sure wasn't like that when I was on board. Anyway thanks for the site.

Hello,
Just a few notes to add to what Millie has already stated. We are not used to being pampered like we were in the Embassy Suites at the Pyro reunion. The fellowship we enjoyed with our friends and fromer shipmates made it a very special time for us. We would like to thank all the people who's sfforts make this all possible.
Thank You

Hey everyone,
Wanted to let you all know what a great time Art and I had this year in Jax. The hotel room was out of this world. I thought I got in on the wrong hotel. The hotel was great and the employees bent backwards to make your stay with them pleasant. The breakfast was good and the chef could cook a mean omelet. And best of all it came with the room rate. Was glad to see all our friends again this year that we met last year for the first time for me. You are all a very good family to belong too. I just wanted to say what a reunion it was.

Just got back from the reunion and thought I would drop a line to let everyone know how much I enjoyed the reunion and your company. It was just great reliving those great times, seeing old friends and making new friends. The tours were great and I don't think I met anyone who did not enjoy themselves. See you all next year!
P.S. I dropped my digital camera at the airport on my return trip. I can't send those photos I promised some of you as all of the photos are lost and can not be downloaded. What Luck!

The Pyro was my first ship. After my first day on the Pyro, I thought I was the most overpaid Ensign in the Navy. Two weeks later I thought, "They're not paying me enough to do this job." I survived the tour and met a bunch of really great sailors. Thanks for the memories.

HOW TO SIMULATE SHIPBOARD LIFE

1. Sleep on the shelf in your closet. Replace the closet door with a curtain. Have your wife whip open the curtain about three hours after you go to sleep. She should then shine a flashlight in your eyes and mumble, "Sorry, wrong rack."

2. Renovate your bathroom. Build a wall across the middle of your bathtub, and move the showerhead down to chest level. When you take showers, make sure you shut off the water while soaping up.

3. When there is a thunderstorm in the area, find a wobbly rocking chair and rock as hard as you can until you are nauseous. Have a supply of stale crackers in your pocket.

4. Put lube oil in your humidifier and set it to "high."

5. Avoid watching TV with the exception of movies, which are played in the middle of the night. Have your family vote on which movie to watch, and then show a different one.

6. For ex-engineering types: leave the lawn mower running in your living room for eight hours a day.

7. Have the paperboy give you a haircut.

8. Once a week, blow compressed air up your chimney, making sure the wind carries the soot onto your neighbor's house. Ignore his complaints.

9. Buy a trash compactor, but use it only once a week. Store up garbage on the other side of your bathtub.

10. Get up every night just before midnight. Have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stale bread. (Optional: Canned ravioli or cold soup.)

11. Make up your family menu a week ahead of time, and do so without looking in your cabinets or refrigerator.

12. Set your alarm clock to go off at random time during the night. When it goes off, jump out of bed and get dressed as fast as you can, being sure to button the top button on your shirt and to stuff your pants into your socks. Run out into your back yard and uncoil the garden hose.

13. Once a month, take every major appliance completely apart, and then put them back together.

14. Use eighteen scoops of budget coffee per pot, and allow each pot to sit at least five hours before drinking.

15. Invite eighty-five people to come and visit for a couple of months.

16. Install a fluorescent lamp under your coffee table, and lie under it to read books.

17. Raise the thresholds and lower the top sills of your front and back doors, so that you either trip over the threshold or bang your head on the sill every time you pass through one of them.

18. Lockwire the lugnuts on your car.

19. When baking a cake, prop up one side of the pan while it is in the oven. Spread the icing really thick on one side to level off the top.

20. Every so often, throw your cat into the swimming pool, and shout, "Man Overboard, Starboard Side." Then run into the kitchen and sweep all pots, pans and dishes off the counter and onto the floor. Yell at your wife and/or the nearest kid for not having the kitchen "stowed for sea."

21. Put on the headphones from your stereo, but don't plug them in. Hang a paper cup around your neck with a piece of string. Go and stand in front of your stove. Say -- to nobody in particular -- "Stove manned and ready." Stand there for three or four hours. Then say -- once again to nobody in particular -- "Stove secured." Roll up the headphone cord and put the headphone and paper cup in a box.

My tour on the Pyro as the Chaplain was my first and last sea duty. I spent 10 yrs on active duty and am finishing up another 10 in the Reserves. Serving on the Pyro during that time was certainly unforgettable. The stories those bulkheads could tell... You wouldn't recognize me now-(Apr2002). Anyone interested in Cheng Looney...

She is a Captain now!!! She commanded an oiler- The Platte and was XO on the Boxer- a big deck amphib....as of now I have no idea where she is at. Maybe she will be an admiral someday...
As for most of you it seems that the Pyro had been a great ship. I have been on four ships and none of the have compared.

I have seen several new names since I last posted on this board, including Lt. Hire and several others. I have a new E address for anyone interested. I can't imagine a better ship or better crewmates than when I served. We all worked hard when it was time to work, and played hard when it was time to play!

Wow! Saw many names from the past. Lasher, Hamm, Rinehart, Awalt, Magann, and Grayson. I started off in 1st Division and then Stream/Rase Division. Left Pyro as an MM3 in Sep '78 in Japan to seperate in San Diego. Thought I would never set foot on Pyro again, but I was wrong. I had joined the Army in Dec '78 and was stationed in Anchorage Alaska. Around 1980 I read in the newspaper that a ship named Pyro was docked in Anchorage. Had the opportunity to set foot again on Pyro as a soldier. Took some friends with me and gave them a guided tour. I still remember how proud I was showing off the Pyro. Though I am from California I have migrated to and now living in Fayetteville, NC.

What a blast from the past! I stumbled across the Pyro page and immediately had to call my daughter (my baby girl is now 17!)to point out the location off the bridge wing from where I "fell" into Suisun Bay. Saw some familiar names: Butch, Horvat, Lloyd, Hiatt, Gunner Burgess, and a mention of Gunner Smith. Wow! The faces are a bit foggy, but the names sure conjured up some memories. Somewhere I have a cruise book or 2, but I've been moving ever since I left the Navy, so God only knows where the books are now. Cheers. Rous

Ahoy Mates. My compliments to those responsible for this site; great job. I noticed a few familiar names. I came onboard in '78. Served in 2nd Division and later in RASE. I'll never forget the good times and the bad. I came on a confused kid, and left a few years later a little older and a lot wiser. My best to you all.

Has anyone heard of or seen Ralph C. Post, BM1?
He came on the PYRO in the early 60's and was
transferred off in 69 I think. Had arm badly
damaged in accident in the ammo locker with
the cable cutter. Was one of my best friends
but haven't been able to find out what ever
happened to him after I left in May of 69. If
anyone knows anything I would appreciate hearing
from you. Thanks

Just wanted to say, you have a real nice web site. Like your photo shots, came across pictures of Subic Bay. The memories they brought back. I was on board the USS Valley Forge LPH-8 in the early 60s. Still looks like the same bridge I crossed, stumbled over or what ever you my want to call it. Don't forget that barbecued MONKEY MEAT on a stick on you way back from liberty.

Had a reunion with a shipmate from 26 years ago, and it was fantastic. Of course age had crept up on us, but our hearts were young. I have a question for the Association, "Why don't we have a reunion here on the West Coast for once?" I know I would be there and I would be willing to bet that quite a few more shipmates would also be there.

I was onboard the USS PYRO from 1984-1989. I started out as a BTFN and ended up BT2. There was a lot of good times and a lot of times that we wished we weren't there. I was aboard during operation Praying Mantis. If there is any engineers from that time that are interested in the Stardate log that had to be removed from the main space, I put in my locker and I have kept it with me, I have it with me now. This is a grat site. Thanks

I'm surprised to find this site! I have a lot of fond memories of the Pyro. One of my favorites is the time we were practising unrepping of the Northern Califonia coast , trying to get ready for the 1st deployment after being in the yard in Washington. At night, a carrier, in particularly rotten weather. A forktruck breaks loose in the battery charging area under the helo-deck and punches a hole in a 55 gallon drum of hydrolic fluid with a fork. Ship doing probably 20 degree rolls. Forktruck sliding from one side to the other. Finally got it tied down though. May we all live in exciting times...

I came aboard the Pyro in April 1970 as a Gunners Mate 3rd and left a Gunners Mate 1st in January 1974. Shipped over in country and got a tax free re-enlistment bonus. I then blew it all on an ex wife. 3rd Division was one of the hardest working divisions on the Pyro. When the Pyro was in port, everyone on board enjoyed 4 or 5 section liberty, while the gunners mates did port and starboard duty every time. Looking back, I wouldn't have traded my experiences onboard the Pyro for anything. I havn't made it to any of the re-unions yet. I may get to one if we have it in one of the casinos in Nevada or how about Olongapo? That would be interesting (ha ha). If any of my old shipmates remember me, you have my e-mail address. Peace to all!

Charles B. Grayson,

HEY, I,D CERTAINLY ENJOY HEARING FROM PREVIOUS CREW MEMBERS OF THE PYRO. I WAS A BOILER TECH. FROM 1973 - 1977. I WORKED WITH SENIOR CHIEF LACY, WHO FOR SOME REASON DISLIKE MOST PEOPLE FROM OHIO. HE WAS FROM SAN FRANCISCO. WHILE ON BOARD WE TRAVELED TO SO MANY PLACES. THE PHILLIPPINES, GUAM, HAWAII, AUSTRALIA, JAPAN, TAIWAN, THIALAND, SINGAPORE,AND UP AND DOWN THE WEST COAST PORTS. WE WERE KNOWN AS AN AMMUNITION SHIP, HOWEVER,WE EARNED NUMEROUS LETTERS AND HASH MARKS FOR OFTEN PASSING MORE FUEL OIL THAN MOST OILERS. WE WERE IN VIETNAM OFTEN, AND THINGS GOT A LITTLE HAIRY FOR A WHILE. II,D LOVE TO HEAR FROM JOE HANES, WHO WAS FROM LACROSSE WISCONSIN. HE JOE HANES, IF YOU'RE OUT THERE, GIVE YOUR OLD BUDDY " LOW RIDER" AN E-MAIL. AMONG OTHERS IN MY DIVISION WERE, AL CASPERSON, FROM WASHINGTON STATE, BUD MALLORY FROM NEBRASKA, PAUL BERTGES FROM PENNSYLVANIA, HOWARD DOWNING FROM KANSAS, STEVE CANTRELL FROM TEXAS, CHILTON " BARNEY " BARNES FROM PENNSYLVANIA, THE O'DEAY BROTHERS FROM LOUISIANA, ED PENNINGTON FROM KENTUCKY, DARRELL GARRETT FROM TEXAS,( DROP A LINE DUDE, IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME) , DOES ANYONE REMEMBER BOB KELLERMAN? IT WAS REALLY A SHOCK TO LOSE A CLOSE FRIEND SUDDENLY. HE CAME ABOARD ABOUT TWO MONTHS AFTER I DID. BT1 KEITH ANDREWS, SENIOR CHIEF LACY, WARRANT OFFICER GREER, DANNY OVERCAMP. I MAY HAVE MISSED A FEW, AND FORGIVE ME IF I HAVE. IF SO PLEASE DROP A LINE TO REMIND US THAT YOU'RE STILL AROUND. HEY, TILL THEN GUYS, AE-24 IS CURRENTLY DECOMISSIONED, AND IS BEING SOLD TO A MERCHANT FLEET. " I GUESS WE TOOK GOOD CARE OF HER, SHE'S BEEN AFLOAT SINCE 1958. GOOD JOB MEN. I HOPE THE NEW OWNERS WILL CARE FOR HER WELL. SHE DID HER PART DURING THE VIETNAM WAR, AND HAS EARNED THE RESPECT OF ALL VETERANS. STAY IN TOUCH. STEVE LOW (BT2). Bob Lindsey served on the USS Pyro in 1962, 63, and was discharged in 64. I have boxes of pictures that he took when he was on board and there are a lot of sailors that I have no names for. If anyone happens to be visiting in my area I would be glad to get them out for them to look through. We exchanged cards and letters with two of his shipmates for several years. One was Joe Psuik and the other was McDuffie.
Bob died in 1981, leaving myself and two young children that I raised. Our son is so much like his father that anyone who served with Bob would recognize his son just by his actions. We also have a daughter who is married and expecting our first grandchild. I remarried 4 years ago and live only 15 miles from the home that Bob and I had built.
My daughter found this site and the pictures. She showed me 3 pictures that had her father's name on them. Two of them were him but not the third.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone, especially Joe Psuik or MacDuffie. Doris Lindsey Baldry

(what he didn't know was that I was a journeyman level machinist and weldor/fabricator in civ-pac, and really wanted to be there all along...any body remember the night the deck load broke loose, the rack of cluster bombs ( CBU'S ) broke open, and we all chased them around the main deck, tossing them overboard... what a night.two days later the EOD guys (gunner Nelson ) found two of them on the winch platt right over the carpenter shop...
